Today is “Mardi Gras.” Mardi Gras in French means “Fat Tuesday” and is the day before Ash Wednesday. A day of celebration before Lent, the forty days of fasting, Mardi Gras in France is actually very tame compared to the activities in some other parts of the world. In France, Mardi Gras is mostly a day when kids (and some adults) dress up in silly costumes to go to school. Some cities, such as Nice, hold a carnival for the occasion.  Of course we normally think of New Orleans and Rio de Janeiro, where Mardi Gras has taken a life of its own with some wild celebrations. Even if you decide not to travel to the carnival today, go ahead and open a bottle of French wine, have some cheese and happy Mardi Gras!
