The French have their own unique, stylish ways of celebrating Halloween traditions. Here are some Halloween photos we found in the blogosphere from different regions of France.

This season we are stocking a new line of kitchen towels that are made in France by Torchons et Bouchons. Torchons et Bouchons literally means “towels and corks” as the company’s first product line depicted vintage French wine labels. Their towels are 100% cotton, machine washable, and printed with food-safe dyes.

We also received new towels from customer favorites Beauvillé and Coucke. (Is it too early to think about Christmas? Because our shipment included beautiful Christmas towels from Beauvillé…)

Click any of the photos below to view more information on I Dream of France.

As always, ground shipping is free for orders of $75 or more! No coupon code required. For faster shipping, or for destinations outside the USA and Canada, please inquire for shipping charges at 1-888-96-FRANCE or bonjour@idreamoffrance.com.

For the Old Town Tustin Promenade Home Tour, I decorated three tables in the garden of a charming bungalow. The family who lives here is laidback, sporty, and sweet. They spend a lot of time outdoors. It was fun to bring over some French decor for a day.

Since 1690, the small northern town of Quimper, in Brittany, has been refining a unique style of pottery. In over 300 years not much has changed in the small manufacture. Computers have been restricted to the offices, stencils have never been used to create the decorations, and everything is still made in-house. What you do find in the manufacturing part of the company — H.B. Henriot — is a group of dedicated artists, working with a brush and a steady hand on each individual piece of pottery or faïence.

Here are a few of Quimper’s lines:

Fleuri Royal

This pattern, created in the 60’s, symbolizes Quimper’s brush stroke and demonstrates the HB-Henriot Faiencerie’s expertise. It uses different techniques which have been established for generations by HB-Henriot’s painters: the “sponging” and of course, the famous “à la touche” used to paint flowers.

This pattern has a unique personality: each piece is slightly different since the artist decorates and paints it according to his or her inspiration. The only required similarity between pieces is the floral garland on the outer edge.

Quimper Faience Fleuri Royal

Tradition

With the Tradition pattern, all of the company’s know-how is expressed in this “French touch” decoration: a character, the “little Breton”, who changes color depending on the artist’s inspiration with flower garlands and the Henriot yellow border.

Quimper Faience - Tradition

Escale

Escale is a modern collection from Quimper Faience celebrating seaside living. Three sailboats are painted in very French tones of yellow and blue, with a golden yellow and blue painted border.

Quimper faience - Escale

Mistral Blue

In the Mistral Blue collection, the small Breton moves to new colors but remains true to the tradition of the first characters, created by the Henriot faiencerie in the 19th century.

Bonne Année — Happy New Year! Two of the home decor magazines we subscribe to are starting off 2011 right with pictorials of Paris apartments. Check out newsstands for the January ’11 issues of Architectural Digest and Veranda.

Architectural Digest has two spreads, one a hôtel particulier (a very large and grand second home, this one has 8,000 interior square feet) with views of the Seine, the other an apartment pied à terre off the Champ de Mars. Because the issue is so new, they haven’t put photos online yet, but here is a lovely Paris apartment from their archives:

LOVE those extraordinary yellow silk drapes!

Veranda shows a Left Bank apartment (actually a wing of the Hôtel de Bauffremont). It’s a lovely study of neutral tones, painted paneling, and country checks in an opulent, grand building full of gilt chandeliers and intricate parquetry — the juxtaposition perhaps a nod to Marie Antoinette’s fondness for pastoral style in the setting of Versailles. Again, the article is too new for photos online, so here is a photo from the 7th Arrondissment, where their building is located. The Eiffel Tower is also in this neighborhood!

Bonus item: Leaping ahead a month, the February ’11 House Beautiful has a review of a new cookbook called The French Country Table by Laura Washburn. Included is a recipe for the author’s soupe au pistou, and a beautiful photograph of her apple tarte, with the slices of apple arranged neatly and concentrically. Whenever I make apple tarte, I try to arrange the slices, but they don’t seem to line up right and I end up pouring them in willy-nilly. Fortunately, it still tastes good unarranged…perhaps we can call it Deconstructed Apple Tarte! Below is a photograph of apple tarte chez nous.
