After several weeks’ wait, our new shipment of Beauvillé kitchen towels has arrived from France! We restocked several designs that had sold out, and have new designs to show you as well. Beauvillé towels are block printed by hand on a linen-cotton blend towel (which some customers have told us is their favorite blend for drying dishes). Their designs are uniquely beautiful and top-quality, and they have been printing textiles in the Alsace region of France since 1759. Click any of the photos to view more information on I Dream of France.

Titian's Assunta

Titian’s Assunta

August 15 is Assumption Day in France, a major holiday (celebrating Virgin Mary ascending into Heaven).  Nearly every business and government office closes, and it’s a very popular time for people to take a summer vacation. In fact, the entire month of August is quiet and slow in France, as people take a long break and go out of town. (For our business here in the States, we have to be careful to get what we need from our French suppliers by the end of July, or we may have to wait until September!)

Where do people in France go for vacation? This a funny question from an American perspective, considering most French people are already somewhere I like to imagine myself being! But everyone has to get out of town once in awhile, no matter where home is, so many head south–somewhere warm, bright, and on the water! Corsica, the Spanish coast, the Balearic islands (Mallorca, Minorca, Ibiza), Venice, or the Riviera.

Even if you do not find yourself in Corsica or Venice this August, you can still relax like the French and enjoy warm summer days at home. I Dream of France has plenty of colorful accessories to help make it happen. As always, orders over $75 ship free.

The April issue of Elle Decor magazine is themed “the travel issue” and is full of luscious dwellings abroad. Capturing my heart is, of course, an apartment in Paris overlooking the Rue de l’Université on the Left Bank of the Seine. The apartment belongs to a glass and ceramics designer named Olivier Gagnère who has worked for Bernardaud among others. Ceramics are a particular passion of mine, and we were lucky enough to tour the Bernardaud factory in Limoges a few years ago. Peeking into the private home of one of their designers shows another facet of the creativity of this world. What a treat!

What I love: the liberal use of the colors lavender and tangerine; the striped Basque tablecloth (similar to our Saint Jean de Luz coated tablecloth); the wall collages of framed drawings, watercolors, and photographs; the bright red dinosaur perched above a cabinet; the pint-size kitchen with a full-size table set for four. These are among the best things in life…color, humor, breaking bread with friends. Wouldn’t you agree?

La Lavande French Soap

La Lavande Round Soap

Those of you who visited our store lately must have noticed how good it smells. This is due to the wonderful soaps from La Lavande. The La Lavande soaps are all natural, made with enriching vegetable oils (shea butter, sweet almond, olive & palm oil). They are moisturizing, beautifully scented with a luxurious lather, beneficial for all skin types (especially dry or sensitive skins), and come in various sizes, shapes and scents. Check out heart and egg shaped soaps, as well as round and bar shapes, in scents such as eglantine (wild rose), lavender (with flowers embedded in the soap, or plain), honey, ocean, lemongrass, linden, and verbena. They are hard milled, very long lasting and are made in Provence, France. The best part is the price: all are under $5! If you are in the neighborhood, stop by the store to see (and smell) for yourself. If you plan on placing an order with us online, why not add a bar or two? Enjoy a special treat for not much money.
