Since 1690, the small northern town of Quimper, in Brittany, has been refining a unique style of pottery. In over 300 years not much has changed in the small manufacture. Computers have been restricted to the offices, stencils have never been used to create the decorations, and everything is still made in-house. What you do find in the manufacturing part of the company — H.B. Henriot — is a group of dedicated artists, working with a brush and a steady hand on each individual piece of pottery or faïence.

Here are a few of Quimper’s lines:

Fleuri Royal

This pattern, created in the 60’s, symbolizes Quimper’s brush stroke and demonstrates the HB-Henriot Faiencerie’s expertise. It uses different techniques which have been established for generations by HB-Henriot’s painters: the “sponging” and of course, the famous “à la touche” used to paint flowers.

This pattern has a unique personality: each piece is slightly different since the artist decorates and paints it according to his or her inspiration. The only required similarity between pieces is the floral garland on the outer edge.

Tradition

With the Tradition pattern, all of the company’s know-how is expressed in this “French touch” decoration: a character, the “little Breton”, who changes color depending on the artist’s inspiration with flower garlands and the Henriot yellow border.

Escale

Escale is a modern collection from Quimper Faience celebrating seaside living. Three sailboats are painted in very French tones of yellow and blue, with a golden yellow and blue painted border.

Mistral Blue

In the Mistral Blue collection, the small Breton moves to new colors but remains true to the tradition of the first characters, created by the Henriot faiencerie in the 19th century.

Sud and Co Corsica

Sud and Co Corsica

Here is a new episode in the “Sud and Co” saga! For those who do not follow the brand, the pottery from the small Provençal town of Cassis and recently sold in the USA under the name “Sud and Co” suddenly became unavailable last year, then again available early this year. Well, only three months after bringing the good news, here we are, announcing that, unfortunately, the beautiful pottery is again unavailable.

Accurate information is hard to obtain, but this is what we understand. A group of artists in Cassis have been making  pottery for some time independently. They are selling their products mostly locally. At several occasions, somebody started representing the products outside Provence under a single name, i.e., Sud and Co.

Lately, they have been part of a local “craft village” which, due to low sales, is closing. Even though the pottery part of the craft village was very successful, they cannot keep doing business under the current arrangement and have to stop selling. It looks like some of the artists want to open a traditional standalone business under which they can sell their craft.

We are, of course, going to stay in touch and will keep you posted as soon as we hear something new. The best way to keep in touch is to subscribe to our mailing list.

Any question about Sud and Co or anything else, please do not hesitate to call or email us.

The April issue of Elle Decor magazine is themed “the travel issue” and is full of luscious dwellings abroad. Capturing my heart is, of course, an apartment in Paris overlooking the Rue de l’Université on the Left Bank of the Seine. The apartment belongs to a glass and ceramics designer named Olivier Gagnère who has worked for Bernardaud among others. Ceramics are a particular passion of mine, and we were lucky enough to tour the Bernardaud factory in Limoges a few years ago. Peeking into the private home of one of their designers shows another facet of the creativity of this world. What a treat!

What I love: the liberal use of the colors lavender and tangerine; the striped Basque tablecloth (similar to our Saint Jean de Luz coated tablecloth); the wall collages of framed drawings, watercolors, and photographs; the bright red dinosaur perched above a cabinet; the pint-size kitchen with a full-size table set for four. These are among the best things in life…color, humor, breaking bread with friends. Wouldn’t you agree?

Quimper Faience

One of our favorite lines of products is the Quimper Faïence from HB-Henriot. Following a tradition of more than 300 years, the small company based in Britanny, France, still makes and paints every single piece by hand, one brush stroke at the time. While their work is rooted in tradition, the company has embraced new technologies for staying in touch with their customers. They just released their new 2010 catalog and put it online for everybody to see. As it is impossible for any retailer to have all their products in stock at all times (though we keep adding more on our website on a regular basis!), we can now bring you the entire catalog through the internet. View or download their catalog and let us know which pieces you are interested in and we can add them to our next monthly order. Follow the link and see for yourself: QUIMPER 2010 CATALOG

We were watching the latest episode of Pitchmen on TV the other night. For those who haven’t seen the Discovery Channel show, it goes behind the scenes of the making of the infomercials hosted by Billy Mays and Anthony Sullivan. One of the items presented was a ceramic plate with little “teeth” used to grind a variety of foods such as garlic or cheese. Hmm interesting, it looks very similar to the Grinding Plate we have been selling. Turns out that the item sold on the infomercial is, by their own admission, a loose copy of the very one we are offering! Well, why go for the copy, most likely made in China, when you can get the real thing, made by hand in France? Oh, and you don’t have to “order in the next ten minutes,” you can shop our website any time you like!
